Gerbils should be housed in tanks, not cages, known as Gerbilariums. Most pet shops do not sell suitable Gerbil housing, and some websites promote tiny cages as being suitable, purely for profit. We don’t affiliate with or endorse poor housing; our priority is gerbil welfare. We talk about suitable housing options below and in our What do I need? Where do I get it? section, we give you tips to accessorise and source items. If your current setup resembles any in our “unsuitable cages” section below, you’ll find guidance here to upgrade. UK options are more limited than mainland Europe but (as of January 2026) new options include Diversa Tanks, Skyline Marrakesh, Bucatstate, Vevor/Uimoso Habitat, Ikea Fabrikor (DIY option) & Ferplast Gerry 100. Second-hand options include DIY aquariums, Ikea Detolf, PPA (formerly Junglepets), Rodipet Laola Nagarium & Skyline Falco 100/120.
Correct Housing
* The Blue Cross (UK) states for 2 Gerbils, a tank of minimum of 100 × 40 × 40 cm for two gerbils (4,000 cm² floorspace), ideally with the addition of a topper, see our Toppers section. For 3 Gerbils, a tank minimum of 120cm x 40 x 40cm = 4,800 cm². European standards are better with a tank minimum of 100 x 50 x 50cm = 5,000 cm² floorspace for a pair of Gerbils plus 25% for each extra Gerbil (please see below where we dicuss this in more detail).
*A tank which has a glass/perspex section with a depth of at least 40cm, which is deep enough to allow a minimum 25cm (10 inches) minimum of burrowing substrate (allow extra room for uneven substrate, burrowing and space above for Gerbils to stand up approx 12cm). Many tanks advertised as Gerbilariums are not deep enough and should not be used.
* Glass vs Perspex: Perspex can be a cheaper option and lighter to move around while glass can be more expensive but will be generally better made. Both work depending on preference.
*The tank needs to be sectioned into two parts to keep the wheel, and sand bath separate. Either by separating a single level glass tank with some log roll (see Ikea Detolf below) or by having a two-level tank with a topper level above (more information in our Toppers section).
* Gerbils communicate using ultrasonic frequencies, so they are very sensitive to sounds we cannot hear. Site your Gerbil tank away from ultrasound generating items, like running water, vacuums, televisions, computers etc. Avoid drafts and do not place the tank entirely in direct sunlight.
Incorrect Housing (see reviews and photo gallery bottom of page)
*Gerbils do not belong in Hamster cages. They contain plastic. There is no depth for Gerbils to burrow.
*Wooden style housing advertised for Hamsters or Guinea Pigs isn’t suitable (i.e. Pawhut style). Gerbils will chew straight through wood and the wooden flooring is easily stained and soiled. These also tend to have too many levels which can lead to Declanning
*Do not use tanks with multiple (more than two) levels or ledges, or vertical tanks with high ledges, Gerbils can fall from height and this can encourage territorial behaviour and Declanning & Fighting. Gerbils need length not height.
*Do not use separate compartments connected by tubes as this can encourage territorial behaviour and Declanning & Fighting.
*Avoid any housing with wire flooring, ladders or wheels. This can trap and injure limbs. Cover wire with cardboard temporarily, before getting a correct setup.

Picture: Everything about this is wrong. Gerbils should not be housed in Hamster cages, they should never have sawdust, woodshavings (except dust extracted Aspen) or any form of plastic. The Fluffy cotton wool style bedding can trap limbs and is fatal if ingested. The wheel would cause back damage and should not be used for any animal. There is no enrichment. Sadly, this is how Gerbils Rachel & Phoebe arrived into our rescue.
Gerbil Housing Requirements
European countries such as Germany and Switzerland set higher welfare standards. European standards recommend a minimum 100 × 50 × 50 cm (5,000 cm² floorspace) for two gerbils, source Swiss Animal Protection – STS and Evaluation of small mammal pet supplies offered in German retail under animal welfare aspects – PMC. For every additional Gerbil an extra 25% floorspace is required. Some UK rescues also will not rehome pairs into anything smaller than 100 × 50 × 50 cm.
In the UK, guidance can be confusing as it varies between welfare organisations and Gerbil forums. The Blue Cross recommends 100 × 40 × 40 cm (4,000 cm² floorspace) for a pair of gerbils, ideally with a topper and for 3 Gerbils, a tank minimum of 120cm x 40 x 40cm = 4,800 cm². The RSPCA does not publish specific housing dimensions and partners with Pets at Home, which currently does not sell any suitable gerbil housing that meet UK or European welfare standards. Fortunately individual RSPCA centres may apply higher internal standards.
While no enclosure will ever replicate a Gerbil’s natural Mongolian desert environment, in captivity we strongly encourage meeting minimum European German/Swiss standards of 100 × 50 × 50 cm (5,000 cm² floorspace) for two gerbils, while recognising 100 × 40 × 40 cm (4,000 cm² floorspace) as the UK absolute minimum. Bigger is always better. Recommended housing options include the IKEA Detolf hack, Diversa tanks/DIY aquariums, PPA (formerly Junglepets), Bucatstate, IKEA Fabrikör DIY hack, Vevor, Ferplast Gerry 100, Rodipet Laola Nagarium, and Skyline Marrakesh.
I realise my Gerbil tank is too small but I can’t afford a proper one, what can I do? If you need a cheap upgrade, look at finding any of the options below second hand or a cheap aquarium which you could make lids for yourself, cheaply, see our Toppers & Lids section.
I am absolutely desperate to find very temporary but suitable Gerbil housing cheaply, what can I do? You will see that we do not recommend Gerbils anywhere near plastic throughout this website, however, if you are desperately in need of SHORT-TERM emergency housing, then you can create housing from a storage crate. Minimum sizes apply and make sure the Gerbils can’t reach the top of any edges that can be nibbled. This guide is for Hamsters but will work for Gerbils How to make a bin cage
Best Gerbil Housing, Tanks & Gerbilariums Reviewed
Here are some tanks we would recommend as suitable. Some might be out of stock brand-new right now, so alternatively, tanks can be sourced on second-hand selling sites. We have no affiliation with any of these products. If you know of any suitable tanks, available in the UK, we have missed, please let us know at Instagram – gerbilcare.co.uk
Ikea Detolf

*UPDATE: December 2023* – The Ikea Detolf is no longer stocked new by Ikea. You can still find them on 2nd hand selling sites, some already converted to tanks.
Ikea Detolf is an Ikea cabinet which measures 163cm x 43 x 37 (L x W x H), (7,009 cm² floorspace). The glass tank burrowing depth is 13.5inches / 37cm. It’s a popular hack for rodent owners, and is one of the better options for space. It’s also lighter and easier to move than some glass tanks. Simply remove the glass shelving and door, and turn it onto it’s back. In this video do bear in mind it’s a Hamster setup and Gerbils absolutely need lids – Setting up an Ikea Detolf . The Ikea replacement for the Detolf is the BLÅLIDEN display cabinet, white, 35x32x151 cm – IKEA UK, but it lacks the depth and height of the Detolf. The Ikea Fabrikor has much better dimensions (115x50x40cm when hacked) and we talk about it below.
There are plenty of YouTube tutorials showing you how to make your own lids i.e DIY IKEA Detolf Lid. Another great hack is to buy two of these mesh lids BOAXEL mesh basket, white, 80x40x15 cm – IKEA from Ikea which fit perfectly on top. We show this setup in our Toppers & Lids page. Whole ready made setups can be found second hand online. In our example picture above, the tank has been divided in half using a log roll, with an entrance/exit to each area cut into the log roll at the top. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.
Custom Lids/Shelves/Tanks/Accessories – Retailers
Below are some sites selling custom Detolf lids & made to measure tank lids. We are not affiliated to any of these sellers.
Happy Henrys Homes are excellent and make specific toppers and lids for Detolfs, Diversa Aquariums & Bucastate (below), if you have a different tank, email them for a custom build. You can also talk to them about all sorts of accessories in 100% pet friendly, eco sourced wood. https://www.happyhenryshomes.co.uk/enclosure-lids-toppers
Kirsty’s Tank Tops make lids for various tanks and replacement shelves.

For how to set up and accessorise a tank like this see our pages Cleaning & Tank Set Up and What do I need? Where do I get it?

We appreciate not everyone reading is in the UK, but if you can get an Ikea delivery, you can get a Fabrikor. As discussed above, with Ikea withdrawing the Detolf, the next best option is the Ikea Fabrikor Gerbil Tank with dimensions of 115x50x40cm (LxWxH) = (5,750 cm² floorspace). This tank hack means you have a sturdy glass tank (not acrylic panels) with excellent dimensions. In the example above the Fabrikor has been customised into a Fabrikor Gerbil Tank as follows.
1. Construct the Fabrikor by following the Ikea Instructions but not attaching the legs, shelves or door.
2. Because the bolts are integrated into the legs (attaching it to the end piece which attaches to the metal struts/frame) you will need to replace these bolts with your own.
3. When you attach the end piece (where the legs would have attached) turn it around so the inside is facing outside, this means the smooth surface with be inside the tank and the grooved side is outside.
4. Attach with your new bolts and cable ties or other choice (this will be on the outside).

The topper in this example is clever use of an old bird cage, we talk more here about Toppers & Lids. The topper is placed on a wooden sheet with a hole cut for access and grooves in the wood to keep it secure. You could also keep the topper secure by attaching wooden beading to the wood sheet, around the topper base, just remember you need to be able to easily lift the topper off. The lid is removable and is a simple frame with mouse-wire. There are nubs on the top of the Fabrikor so you will need to create cut outs on the lid so it’s flush.

If you have any gaps or want to completely seal the tank you could use a pet safe sealant like CT1 Sealant. The science is here Silicone Sealants and Animals . For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up a tank see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.

Note at time of writing, November 2025, PPA have stopped selling small pet housing, but these tanks can still be found 2nd hand, alternatively Diversa tanks offer the same style of tanks with an excellent choice of sizes, see below. Some of the PPA tanks are too small, so go for a minimum size 48”x18”x15” (122 x 46 x 38cm L x H x W) = (5,152 cm² floorspace)
You can set these up in the same way as the Marrakesh, Detolf, or other aquariums, by dividing the tank into two parts using a log roll to separate the burrowing area from the food, sand, and wheel area or for more space you could add a Topper to any of these options. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.
DIY Aquarium / Diversa Tanks

Diversa Tanks If you want a new, readily available, off the shelf brand new aquarium then Diversa Tanks on Ebay, are excellent. They supply the minimum UK size (160 litre) 100cm x 40 x 40 (L X W x H) = (4,000 cm² floorspace), then various sizes up to the the (300 litre) DIVERSA Aquarium 120x50x50 = (6,000 cm² floorspace) and as we discuss above European standards of minimum 5,000 cm² floorspace are encouraged. These tanks are glass and well made. Customise it in the same way we have the Marrakesh and Detolf or/and add Toppers & Lids. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page. Alternatively you can pick up old aquariums on second hand selling sites. Pictured is a tank we were given from a friends shed, which is customised by us building lids and a topper.

Skyline Falco

Skyline Falco 120 & Skyline Falco 100 – The Falco 120 measures 114 x 74 x 75cm (LxWxH) = (8,436 cm² floorspace). The Falco 100 measures 100 x 50 x 75cm (LxWxH) = (5,000 cm² floorspace) . Burrowing depth 40cm. The smaller Falco 80 measures 75cm x 45 x 63 (L x W x H) = (3,375 cm² floorspace) so you need to find the 120/100 version instead. The Falco used to be widely available in the UK, but European supplier issues from Germany mean they don’t tend to be found new now, so look out for them on second-hand selling sites. The construction is glass and metal and it’s well constructed and sturdy. The opening is at the top, which can be very high depending what the tank is placed on. There’s only room for a 21cm wheel on the top ledges, but you can get a 28cm wheel in by fixing it to the bars between the ledges. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.
Skyline Marrakesh

Skyline Marrakesh 120 Small Pet Cage Wood & Skyline Marrakesh 120 Small Pet Cage White & Skyline Marrakesh 100 at the time of writing are back in stock in the UK! The 100 measures 96 x 47 x 38cm (L x W x H) = (4,512cm² floorspace). Burrowing depth 15inches / 38cm which meets UK minimum but not European standards. The Skyline Marrakesh 120 Small Pet Cage Wood measures 115 x 55 x 50cm (L x W x H) = (6,360 cm² floorspace) so this is the size to get. If you find any of these options out of stock, you can ask to be notified when it’s back or email Zooplus directly to find out. It’s constructed from wood ends and back which offer privacy and are chew proof, the floor and front are glass which is sturdy and easy to clean. The Marrakesh can easily accommodate a 28cm wooden wheel (pictured). The burrowing area can be sectioned off using a wooden log roll, making it a similar set up to, but a smaller version of the Detolf (above) or you could arrange it like the Bucastate we have pictured. You could add a small stand like Happy Henrys Homes Platforms to place a sand dish on, or a curved glass bowl as above. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.
Bucatstate

Please check TEMU as they regularly offer much cheaper deals!
The Bucastate 100x50x52.5cm & Bucastate 120cm x 60cm & 100cm x 50cm is marketed towards Hamsters and small rodents. This is a popular choice for Gerbils. The Bucatstate 2.0 measures 100 x 50 x 52.5cm (L x W x H) = (5,000 cm² floorspace). Bucatstate 3.0 is a larger version at 120cm x 60cm x 62cm = (7,200 cm² floorspace) which is the one to get. There is a front opening door, which is a good way to interact with your Gerbils, which is 26cm (half way) from the tank floor. This allows for the 25cm minimum of substrate that Gerbils need, however, they don’t always burrow evenly and you may find substrate falling out when you open the door, so you may need to rely on the top opening only. The tank is made from acrylic that slots into a metal frame and there is self assembly required. Due to the amount of substrate Gerbils need there can be some “bulging” in the acrylic panels, but they remain a very popular choice. There is plenty of room for a 28cm wheel. The ventilation is from vent slots at the top of the acrylic and in the metal lid. The lid opens silently on hinges and comes with anti vibration stickers so it can be opened and closed without slamming and disturbing your Gerbils. This tank can be separated in the same way as the Marrakesh and DIY Aquariums above. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.

Rodipet Laola Nagarium Gerbilarium (100 x 50 x 50cm or 120 x 50 x 50cm)

Rodipet Laola Nagarium Gerbilarium: Update: January 2026 we cannot currently find links to new Rodipet Gerbilariums, these come in and out of stock, but may be found 2nd hand. These Gerbilariums are manufactured and delivered from Germany (UK delivery available when in stock). The XXL measures 100 x 50cm x 60cm (L x W x H) = (5,000 cm² floorspace). There is a top opening door, with ventilation vents. The 60cm height allows for the 25cm minimum of substrate that Gerbils need plus body-space clearance. There is plenty of room for a 28cm wheel too. The tank is made from MDF with a plastic type/non glass window, feels sturdy and secure and self assembly is required. Like the Marrakesh, three sides of the tank are solid which gives a more secure private feel for the Gerbils. This tank can be separated in the same way as the Marrakesh and DIY Aquariums above, however to order a custom built topper is difficult due to the design, so would require some tricky DIY skills. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.
VEVOR Habitat & Uimoso Habitat

VEVOR Habitat & Uimoso Habitat (do check Temu for cheaper deals but make sure they have the right size). These are the same tank, marketed under different distributors, and are a cheaper flimsier quality version of the Bucatstate / Rodipet style housing. It measures 96cmx47cmx55cm (L x W x H) = (4,512 cm² floorspace) which meets UK minimum floor space requirements but not European standards. For that reason a Bucatstate is preferable as it’s better made and slightly larger. There is a top opening door, with ventilation vents. There is also a front opening door which is positioned too low when the tank is full of substrate, so the solution is to install that panel upside down, so the door is higher. The 55cm height allows for the 25cm minimum of substrate that Gerbils need plus body-space clearance. There is plenty of room for a 28cm wheel too. The tank is made from a metal frame with clear acrylic panels. Self assembly is required. While acrylic tanks are much lighter to move around and cheaper, glass tanks are sturdier. This tank can be separated in the same way as the Bucastate and Rodipet above. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.

Ferplast Jerry 100 measures 101.7 x 51.9 x 53.1cm (L x W x H) = (5,278 cm² floorspace) which meets minimum floor space requirements. There is a top opening door, with metal bar ventilation. The 53cm height allows for the 25cm minimum of substrate that Gerbils need plus body-space clearance. There is plenty of room for a 28cm wheel too. The tank is made from solid glass. While acrylic tanks are much lighter to move around and cheaper, glass tanks are sturdier. This tank can be separated and set up in the same way as the Bucastate, Rodipet, Vevor/Uimoso above. For how to accessorise see our What do I need? Where do I get it? page. For how to set up see our Cleaning & Tank Set Up page.

Gerbil Housing that is NOT suitable (and we explain why)
Ferplast Gabry 80, 60 & 50

We explain why the Ferplast Gabry 80 (pictured) is not suitable. The Gabry measures 80cm x 30x 50 (L x W x H) = (2,400 cm² floorspace) which doesn’t meet minimum welfare standards. Burrowing depth 11 inches / 28cm. There are even smaller versions, called the Gabry 50 and Gabry 60 which are woefully small. The plastic that holds the topper in place can easily be chewed, which can be fatal if ingested. The metal ledge is hard to use unless covered in cardboard to hide the pre-cut holes. There isn’t room on the top level for a 28cm wheel, only a 21cm wheel fixed to the side wire with a screw and metal disc.
Ferplast Karat 100 & 80

The Ferplast Karat 100 so nearly gets it right for Gerbils, however it was designed for Hamsters, which have entirely different needs. It measures 98.5 x 50.5 x 61.5 cm (L W H) = (4,974cm² floorspace), which is a good size and meets the minimum housing requirements we talk about above. However, the glass tank section on the 100 model is 25cm deep and not suitable for Gerbils, as we recommend at least 40cm depth to accommodate the 25 cm of minimum burrowing substrate. Gerbils do not burrow evenly, so without enough tank depth, you end up with bedding flicked out of the bars or falling out of the door when you open it. There is an inbuilt plastic wheel which will cause back damage, and does not meet the 28cm minimum size. We talk about wheel sizes here Enrichment Wheels. The topper/cage section is held in place with plastic hooks, (unlike the Skyline Falco which uses metal which can’t be chewed). What a shame, if this was 15cm deeper in the tank area, and contained no plastic, it would rival the Falco 100, and we would recommend it as an off the shelf, tank with topper, to order in the UK. There is a Ferplast Karat 80 which doesn’t meet the Blue Cross minimum size recommendation.
Niteangel Stacker Series

The Niteangel Stacker Series is not suitable as Gerbil housing at 80cm x 45 x 50 (L x W X H) = (3,600 cm² floorspace) of floorspace, which doesn’t meet minimum floorspace requirements. It’s disappointing to see a well designed and constructed tank from a company like Niteangel failing to meet the minimum housing size for the Gerbils and Hamsters it’s marketed towards.
The Ferplast Domster 100 & 120

The Ferplast Domster 120 measures 120x50x66.5cm (LxWxH) = (6,000 cm² floorspace) and the Domster 100 measures 100x50x61cm (LxWxH) = (5,000 cm² floorspace). While both of these tanks meet the minimum tank size requirements, they’re designed for Hamsters which have different needs. The perspex bottom area is only 25cm deep. With a minimum 25cm substrate depth needed, and Gerbils not burrowing evenly, you will end up with substrate falling out of the bars and doors. Additionally the perspex sides are held in place with thin wood and plastic and Gerbils will nibble their way out of that in no time. It also comes with various plastic items (wheel, house, bowls) none of which are suitable for Gerbils. The plastic wheel is far too small (28cm minimum). It may work with adaptations for other rodents, but not for Gerbils and there are far better options we have discussed above.
Critters Choice Jumbo Gerbilarium

The Critters Choice Jumbo Gerbilarium is not suitable as permanent housing at 70cm x 40 x 50 (L x W X H) (2,800 cm² floorspace) which doesn’t meet minimum UK or European welfare standards and is no where close to “Jumbo”. There’s only room for a 21cm wheel, which could cause back damage as it’s too small and would have to rest on the ledges. The glass ledges are too low and prevent room for deep enough substrate.
Little Friends Gerbilariums

Little Friends Mayfair Gerbilarium measures 51.5 x 28 x 40 cm (L x W x H) (1,442 cm² floorspace). Little Friends Savoy Gerbilarium measures 58.5 x 38 x 47.5 cm (2,223 cm² floorspace). Neither meet minimum UK or European welfare standards, not even half, and are horribly small. We talk about why tanks should allow enough depth for Gerbils to dig, tunnel and display their natural instincts here Substrate Bedding & Nest Boxes. There is an inbuilt plastic wheel which is too small and will cause back damage, and does not meet the 28cm we recommend nor could you fit one in. We talk about the importance of wheel sizing here Enrichment Wheels. Also Gerbils can ingest plastic, which can cause serious harm.
Qute/Omlet Gerbil & Hamster Cage

The Qute Omlet Gerbil Cage measures 39 x 31 x 25.4cm (L x W x H) in the burrowing tray, (1,209 cm² floorspace), with a similar sized upper floor. It does not meet minimum UK or European welfare standards, not even a third of it! This enclosure is awful in every way. The upper floor has an inbuilt plastic wheel of 19cm, which is not suitable as plastic is dangerous to Gerbils if ingested, and it’s not large enough. We recommend a 28cm wheel to keep the back flat, and not arched which can cause back damage and pain. There is a plastic tube measuring 6.8cm at its narrowest point to access each level. An old or sick Gerbil will have issues reaching it’s food or water. In our opinion, the Qute has been designed for the benefit of humans, while saving space, with no consideration for Gerbils needs whatsoever and is in no way is suitable.

We find the Rosewood Abode Gerbilarium to be one of the most heartbreaking and distressing looking cages. We pity the Gerbil pictured that had to be inside this thing for the promotional picture. What is there to say? The dimensions are 55 x 39 x 46cm = (2,145 cm² floorspace), so barely half the size of minimum UK and European welfare standards. You can’t fit a wheel in it, never mind a full size 28 cm wheel. It’s full of plastic which is fatal if ingested by Gerbils and is unsuitable and cruel.
Savic XL/Savic Lugano/Savic Gerbil, Hamster and Mouse Cage
Many people are sold these cages by pet shops who have zero interest in Gerbil welfare and just want to flog unsuitable products for profit. Sadly many Gerbils are housed in the Savic XL 70 x 37 x 51cm (1,850 cm² floorspace). The Savic Lugano 44 x 60 x 29cm (2,640 cm² floorspace). The Savic Gerbilarium Gerbil Hamster Mouse Cage 52.4 x 51 x 26cm (L x W x D) (2,672cm² floorspace). The Habitat Hamster Mouse Gerbil Cage (various small sizes). The Classic Premium Small Animal Glass Home 78 x 48 x 38cm (L x W x D) (3,744 cm² floorspace).. These are generally sold through Pets at Home. None of these products meet minimum UK or European welfare standards, are far too small, are not suitable for Gerbils and are pictured below. The Savic XL is misleading as it gives max dimensions of 70cm (L) that actually taper in to a much smaller size of around 50cm at the bottom of the tank, giving it a floor space of 1,850cm, and it calls itself extra large! There is no room for a 28cm wheel. These cages have wire ladders and floors which are uncomfortable for rodents to walk on like solid floors, and can also trap and injure limbs. If you have a wire floor on your cage, you need to upgrade urgently, but in the meantime cover the wire floor with cardboard. Then we’d suggest taking any of these to the tip and crush them first so they can never be re-used.
Small housing is cruel and your pets will live a miserable life. Example housing below (just some of many) that does not meet the UK or European/German/Swiss welfare standards. No reputable Gerbil Care or pet websites should advertise these. If you own any of these, please look at our recommendations above so you can upgrade and give your pets a happy life. We thank you and your Gerbils will thank you.
