UK Vets – Gerbil Care

Freddie & Marinakis – Their previous owners moved and sadly could not take them, so they ended up in rescue. These happy, and very confident boys were adopted by us in April 2025.

Gerbils are Exotic Pets

Gerbils are classed as Exotic Pets, which means not all Vets or Practices specialise in the care of small rodents and mammals. Ideally what you need is a Vet Practice described as an “Exotic Vet” or a specialist within that practice that can treat “Exotic Pets/Gerbils/Small Mammals”.

If you’re taking a Gerbil to the vet, take their friends too. Gerbils primarily recognise each other by scent, and for that reason it’s important that they are not separated for any longer than absolutely necessary. They can “forget” the scent of their partner within a few days or as short as a couple of hours. If one Gerbil has an operation, make sure they all go together and are re-united as soon as recovery is complete, otherwise you could risk a de-clan and need to re-bond, see here Bonding & Split Cage – Gerbil Care

To find a suitable vet you should first visit the RCVS (Royal College of Vetinary Surgeons) website, and search for your area and the type of animals each practice treats. I.e. Location: “Manchester” or “Buckinghamshire”, select “RCVS” in the tick box, and then on the right hand side of the page select “Animals Treated” and then “Small Mammals”. The link is here Find a Vet – ExoticDirect

Please check before booking your Gerbils in for treatment the level of expertise your Vet has.

If you have found a great Gerbil vet that is not listed, let us know at Instagram

Listed below are some of the vets which have been recommended by rodent owners. Please note this list is compiled from positive user experiences and there is no affiliation whatsoever with any of these vet practices. Please try the search link above first.
